Sara Franqueira

Sara Franqueira holds a PhD in Theatre Studies (FLUL) with a thesis on contemporary set design, a Master’s degree in Artistic Studies (FLUL) with a study on the relationship between set design and the visual arts, and a degree in Architecture (FAUTL). She is currently a lecturer at ESTC – School of Theatre and Cinema, having also taught at ESTAL – Lisbon School of Technology and Arts, as well as at secondary school level. Alongside her teaching work, she conducts research into contemporary scenography, producing papers, articles and essays on the visuality and materiality of the performing arts. She has designed over 60 stage sets presented in various venues and theatres and has collaborated with creators such as Miguel Castro Caldas, Miguel Maia, Martim Pedroso, Marina Nabais, Raquel André, Rui Catalão, Sofia Cabrita, Vanda Rodrigues, Yola Pinto, João de Brito, Helder Gamboa, Paulo Lameiro, Simão Costa and Caroline Bergeron. She also works on performative and transdisciplinary projects, developing exhibition spaces and curating specific exhibitions, notably her curatorship of the Performance Space section, at the invitation of the organisation as part of the group of international curators for the 2027 edition, and her participation in Portuguese representations, notably the co-curation of the Portuguese Representation at the 2023 Prague Quadrennial in the Student Section and the coordination of the Performative Space section of the Official Portuguese Representation in 2015. Alongside her work as a creator and researcher, she has been involved in the practice of mediation since 2007, having joined the team at the Belém Cultural Centre and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation; she is currently responsible for three ongoing mediation and participation projects: Sub21 and Mutantes at the BoCA Biennial, and the Ministry of the Sensible for the Belém Cultural Centre.
