António Polainas

Holding a PhD in Architecture, he developed his professional career at RTP between 1977 and 2023, working in operations, production, image, and scenography, having assumed responsibility for the Scenography department as its principal creative for over 25 years. He holds a degree in Architecture from ESBAL, a specialisation in Theatre — Scene Design from Instituto Politécnico de Lisboa, a Master's degree in Theory of Architecture from Universidade Lusíada, a Diploma of Advanced Studies (DEA) from the University of Seville, and a PhD in Architecture from Universidade da Beira Interior.

Throughout his career, he has developed architecture and scenography projects in Portugal, Spain, Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, São Tomé and Príncipe, and Timor. He is a researcher at the Centro de Investigação em Território, Arquitetura e Design (CITAD) and a collaborator at the Centro de Investigação Transdisciplinar "Cultura, Espaço e Memória" (CITCEM), where he pursues a dedicated research line on television scenography.

His main areas of interest and research focus on Architecture, Audiovisual, Image, and Television. He is a member of the Academia Nacional de Belas-Artes de Lisboa and a founding member of the Associação Portuguesa de Cenografia (APCEN). He taught at university level between 1999 and 2023, lecturing in undergraduate and master's programmes in the fields of Architecture, Scene Design, and Virtual Scenography. He has participated in several international conferences on Architecture and Scenography in Portugal, Poland, Italy, and Mozambique, and also pursues artistic work in Drawing and Photography, having held exhibitions in Lisbon and Mozambique.
